Spanish authorities introduced an economic supplement in 2021 as part of ongoing efforts to improve the pension system. Commonly referred to as the “maternity compensation” or “child bonus,” this measure aims to acknowledge how raising children and caring for family members has impacted the professional careers of many individuals, particularly women, who were often forced to pause their academic or work activities to provide care during times of need.
This supplement applies to retirement, widowhood, and disability pensions. It provides an additional monthly amount per child born to the beneficiary. The specific goal is to offset gaps in social security contributions, reductions in working hours, and periods of career interruption caused by family responsibilities, thereby enhancing income equity among retirees.
While initially designed for women, Spain’s Supreme Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union extended the benefit to men whose careers were also affected by fatherhood.

The amount is not a percentage of the pension but a fixed sum of €36 per month per child, up to a maximum of four children. It is paid out in 14 installments per year. As a result, retirees with three children can receive up to €108 extra per month, while those with four children can receive €144.

For families with multiple children or for women who historically assumed the role of caregivers, this supplement strengthens retirees’ monthly income while helping to reduce the gender gap through principles of social justice and financial support.
