Ruud Gullit has voiced what many Chelsea supporters already suspect: the managerial position at Stamford Bridge has lost its former luster and is no longer a magnet for world-class coaches. According to the former Blues manager, the current setup simply doesn’t appeal to elite tacticians.
The root cause, Gullit argues, lies in the squad’s composition and the restrictions placed on the manager’s authority. “Yes [it’s lost its appeal], because any manager would see what I see and say: ‘I need experienced players. I need a Casemiro, a [Aurelien] Tchouameni. I need these types of players in midfield. I need this kind of experience alongside the young talent’. And if you don’t have them, it’s going to be a problem,” the Dutchman explained, as reported by Goal.com.
Chelsea’s recruitment model now prioritizes signing young prospects while limiting the coach’s influence over squad building. During interviews, potential managers are informed that they will have reduced power and that the club will not bring in high-wage veterans to guide the younger players. This approach, Gullit suggests, deters top coaches who want control and a balanced mix of youth and experience.
