Every transfer window brings multi-million dollar moves for football stars, but few know what happens behind the digital scenes that drive these deals. A key player today is the closed platform TransferRoom, used by hundreds of clubs worldwide to negotiate transfers. How is this ‘technology’ fundamentally reshaping the football business? Vice president Frederik Broholt discussed this and much more on the Livesport Daily podcast from Flashscore.

It might seem odd that a digital platform thrives in an industry so built on human relationships. Yet as Broholt explains, TransferRoom exists to bring both sides together, helping facilitate thousands of transfers.

“While TransferRoom is a digital platform, football is a sector where personal and human relationships are essential. If you think about it, a football club invests most of its money in players on the pitch and the team around them. It’s one of the most relationship-intensive businesses you can imagine. Those relationships truly matter. That’s why we organize in-person TransferRoom events and deal days on our platform.”

At these events, clubs and agents meet for one, two, or three days, taking part in dozens of short, scheduled meetings, networking, and getting firsthand information. In a way, it resembles a football speed-dating format—sometimes a club can have 20 or 30 interviews in a single day, moving from one table to another with 12 or 15 minutes per meeting before moving on.

TransferRoom is also making history, having been part of a deal between two countries rarely seen in the transfer market. Broholt added, “Since 2017, we have facilitated a total of 10,000 transfers and agreements. And jokingly, I think deal number 10,000 is a great example of a truly impactful transfer. It involved a Colombian striker named Brayan León, who moved from Independiente de Medellín in Colombia to Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa. Interestingly, this was the first transfer ever between those two countries. It’s the first time we’ve handled a transfer from Colombia to South Africa. I can’t say it would never have happened without TransferRoom, but I can say with certainty it was made possible by this platform.”

The platform has also been involved in bigger operations. The most notable might be Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish international, who played for Coventry, made the leap to Portugal where he excelled. Broholt explained, “If I had to mention some transfers that resonated most with fans or listeners, I’d say we helped in Antoine Semenyo’s move from Bristol City to Bournemouth. Now, of course, he plays for Manchester City, but at the time that was the transfer. When Gyokeres moved from Coventry in England to Sporting Lisbon, it was also a deal managed through TransferRoom. And Evander, who left Midtjylland for Portland for a record fee at that time, was also a TransferRoom agreement. There are many transfers most people and listeners can relate to, and others that may be less known but where TransferRoom has done great work.”

The opaque world of football transfers has long been a closely guarded secret, but through its platform, TransferRoom has made it easier for clubs to find what they need. Broholt went on to explain how the system works: clubs list players available for transfer, set asking prices, and browse offers from peers globally. The platform provides verified data, real-time updates, and direct communication channels, cutting out intermediaries and speeding up negotiations. “It brings transparency to a process that was previously full of uncertainty,” Broholt said.
